HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Britney Spears’ psychiatric hospital stay has been extended to a 14-day hold, a source tells the Associated Press.
The 26-year-old Spears was scheduled to be released from UCLA’s Medical Center on Sunday, however doctors and a medical officer at the ward determined that she should remain, the source revealed.
According to the source, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter, Spears’ stay was extended by hospital staff members, who cited a section in the state law that allows patients to be retained for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others.
At an emergency hearing Friday, Court Commissioner Reva Goetz named the pop star’s father, Jamie Spears, as her conservator. A conservatorship is created when a court concludes that a person can no longer care for themselves or their personal and financial affairs.
A restraining order was also issued against the singer’s friend and manager, Sam Lutfi, who up until last week has been handling most of the “Gimme More” singer’s affairs.
A follow-up hearing on the conservatorship is scheduled for Monday.
Spears entered UCLA on a 72-hour hold for evaluation on Thursday. It is the second time that she has been hospitalized this year, with the first coming in early January following a custody stand-off over her two sons, 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James, with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
