HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” tasted pretty good to moviegoers over the weekend.
The 3-D animated family comedy debuted with sales of $30.1 million to earn the top spot at the weekend box office. The total easily outdistanced Matt Damon’s “The Informant,” which opened with a second-place finish at $10.5 million.
Last week’s No. 1, Tyler Perry’s “I Can Do Bad All By Myself,” finished third with $10 million in sales.
Jennifer Aniston’s “Love Happens” ($8.5 million) and Megan Fox’s “Jennifer’s Body” ($6.8 million) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the top five.
“Cloudy” is based on the 1978 children’s book by Judi and Ron Barrett, in which a nerdy outcast invents a device that sends hamburgers, pizzas and pancakes dropping from the heavens. Among the stars lending their voice to the film are Bill Hader, Anna Faris and Neil Patrick Harris.
