HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Despicable Me, the first 3-D animated film from Universal Pictures, opened with an estimated $60.1 million to easily claim the weekend box office title, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
Led by the voice of Steve Carell, Despicable Me knocked off The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, which slipped to second place with $33.35 million.
Predators, starring Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne, had a strong $25.3 million debut to finish third at the box office.
Toy Story 3 ($22 million) and The Last Airbender ($17.15 million) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the weekend top five.
