HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — While she has seemingly made a name for herself, Emma Roberts would like to escape the shadows of her famous aunt.
Roberts made her acting debut at the age of nine in the film “Blow” and landed the starring role in the Nickelodeon series “Unfabulous” three years later. She has since starred in such family-friendly films as “Nancy Drew” and “Hotel for Dogs,” but the young star is now diving into a pair of indie flicks, including the drama “Lymelife,” which she hopes brings along a new identity.
“Some people look at me and think, ‘She’s just Julia Robert’s niece,’ ” the 18-year-old actress reveals in the April issue of Teen Vogue. “So I wanted to do something smaller and edgier, something that would show I really am an actress.”
Roberts co-stars alongside Alec Baldwin and Cynthia Nixon in the film, which she describes as “American Beauty” meets “The Ice Storm.” The busy startlet also has another indie upcoming, “The Winning Season,” as well as the teen comedy “Wild Child.” While’s she’s thankful for all the work, Roberts admits her busy schedule over the last several years has left her with a long to-do list.
“I remember being twelve and thinking, I can’t wait until I’m sixteen, because by then I’m going to have a car, a driver’s license, a really cool boyfriend, and boobs,” she says of her teen checklist, before admitting that “nothing has been checked off.”
Roberts blames her busy shooting schedule on the first two items not being fulfilled yet. As for the boyfriend, she admits to currently having an eye for “musicians,” although Nick Jonas of the sibling trio the Jonas Brothers has been scratched off her list.
“I used to have a crush on Nick, but he’s kind of making his rounds in Hollywood, and I don’t know if I like that,” she says.
