LONDON — George Michael could be headed to jail after crashing his car into a London building last month while under the influence of drugs.
On Tuesday, the 47-year-old singer appeared in London’s Highbury Corner Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs and possession of cannabis, according to the Associated Press.
Michael, whose real name is Georgios Panayiotou, was banned from driving for six months. The judge also said he could face jail time when he is sentenced on Sept. 14.
Police found Michael slumped at the wheel of his Range Rover when he crashed into a branch of Snappy Snaps in Hampstead in the early hours of July 4. The car’s engine was still running when authorities arrived at the scene.
"Mr. Michael looked at the officer with his eyes wide open and the officers could see his pupils were dilated," the prosecutor told the court. "They opened the door and could see he was dripping with sweat."
This isn’t the first time Michael has been busted behind the wheel. In 2007, he was banned from driving for two years after pleading guilty to driving on drugs. The former Wham! star was also arrested last year on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after his car hit a tractor-trailer, but he was released without charges.
