MIAMI — “Dancing With the Stars” champion Helio Castroneves was indicted Thursday on tax evasion and tax fraud charges, The Associated Press reports.
The 33-year-old race car driver is accused of failing to report about $5.5 million in income to the IRS between 1999 and 2004. He is charged with conspiracy and six counts of tax evasion, with each count carrying a maximum five-year prison sentence, AP says. The indictment claims that Castroneves used offshore accounts to hide the income in question.
Also charged in the case were his sister and business manager, Katiucia Castroneves, 35, as well as his attorney, Alan Miller, 71.
Castroneves, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, captured the 2007 “Dancing With the Stars” title with Julianne Hough.
The Brazilian-born Castroneves is expected appear in a Miami court on Friday.
