HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Jesse James says watching Sandra Bullock as a mother to an adopted son, Louis, strengthened their relationship.
"To see her in the role as mother is, like, one of the most amazing things I've ever seen," James tells ABC News' Nightline in an interview airing Tuesday night. "She is like a fish to water ... as soon as she put that baby into her hands it was automatic and amazing."
"I found a new trust for her, like I knew she wasn't going to leave, and our relationship blossomed," he adds of Bullock, who was already a stepmom to his three children – daughters Chandler and Sunny and and son Jesse Jr.
James, 41, says he and Bullock, 45, found out the adoption had gone through around Christmas. They welcomed the New Orleans-born baby into their family on New Year's Day, just months before his infidelity led to the couple divorcing.
When asked why they adopted a black child, James says he "didn't care what color" the baby was. "My only prerequisite for adopting a baby: I want the baby that needs us the most."
James also tells interviewer Vicki Mabrey that he never thought he could get away with cheating on his Oscar-winning wife.
"When I was doing it, you know, one, I knew it was horrible, it made me feel horrible. And two, I knew I would get caught eventually, and I think I wanted to get caught," he explains. "I know for a fact now what it was, you know. I mean, it was me trying to self-sabotage my life."
So was Bullock ever suspicious?
"I think she's had her suspicions in the past, but, you know, I lied, and lied my way out of it," he says. "I lied to everyone about everything, even to myself."
