HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Where in the world was Matt Lauer Monday? Not on the “Today Show” thanks to a collision with a deer over the weekend.
The 51-year-old Lauer was bicycling on Long Island when a deer jumped into his path, causing him to flip over the handlebars. The avid cyclist injured his shoulder on the fall and will have surgery on Monday afternoon.

The 51-year-old Lauer was bicycling on Long Island when a deer jumped into his path, causing him to flip over the handlebars. The avid cyclist injured his shoulder on the fall and will have surgery on Monday afternoon.
“Today” co-host Meredith Vieira said Lauer remains upbeat despite the setback, informing her in an email that he believes “the deer was hired by the competition.” Vieira, however, said she knows better.
“I hired the deer,” she joked, “but just graze him.”
Lauer is expected to return to the NBC morning show on Wednesday.
