HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department has opened a domestic violence investigation involving Mel Gibson and his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.
Police say the alleged incident took place on Jan. 6 in Malibu, Calif. No other details about the case were immediately available.
Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore told the Associated Press that detectives interviewed Grigorieva on Monday, but they’ve yet to meet with Gibson.
"We’re in the process of verifying, verifying, verifying," Whitmore said. "All the allegations that have been put forth will be thoroughly investigated."
The domestic violence case is being handled by the same sheriff’s substation that handled Gibson’s 2006 arrest on suspicion of drunken driving, in which he famously went on a tirade against Jews.
Gibson, 54, and Grigorieva, 40, have been locked in a bitter custody battle over their 8-month-old daughter, Lucia. They split in April after a year of dating.
Last week, both TMZ and RadarOnline reported they had heard tapes in which Gibson used the N-word and other derogatory phrases in a profanity-laced tirade against Grigorieva.
"You’re an embarrassment to me," the actor allegedly said. "You look like a f—ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n—ers, it will be your fault."
