HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mel Gibson still has at least one person in his corner.
The actor’s estranged wife, Robyn Moore, is defending Gibson against allegations he hit former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.
"Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage," she wrote in a declaration submitted to the court for Gibson’s ongoing custody battle with Grigorieva, according to TMZ. "Mel was a wonderful and loving father."
On Thursday, lawyers for Gibson and Grigorieva squared off as the bitter custody dispute continued over their 8-month-old daughter, Lucia. The support from his soon-to-be ex-wife could be critical, particularly after Gibson’s ranting phone calls against Grigorieva were continually leaked online for the past week.
"Robyn felt she needed to speak out to protect her children and family," a source tells People about Moore getting involved. "Robyn’s tried to stay out of this, but she wanted to make sure there was no speculation of what happened within her family."
Moore filed for divorce from Gibson after nearly 30 years of marriage in April 2009. They have seven children together.
Last week, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department announced it had opened a domestic violence investigation involving Gibson and Grigorieva, whose bitter breakup began when they split in April after a year of dating.
