NEW YORK — It was a star-studded affair on Monday night at the Costume Institute Gala Benefit to celebrate the opening of the "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel were among the stars heating up the red carpet. They were joined by fellow couples Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, and Jude Law and Sienna Miller.
Other celebrities in attendance included Anna Hathaway, Blake Lively, Eva Longoria Parker, Eva Mendes, Jessica Alba, Katy Perry, Kristen Stewart, Nicole Richie, Oprah Winfrey, Renee Zellweger, Diddy, Taylor Swift, Tina Fey and Zoe Saldana.
The "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" exhibition, on view from May 5 through August 15, explores developing perceptions of the modern American woman from the 1890s to the 1940s, and how they have affected the way American women are seen today. Focusing on archetypes of American femininity through dress, the exhibition reveals how the American woman initiated style revolutions that mirrored her social, political, and sartorial emancipation. Early mass-media representations of American women established the fundamental characteristics of American style – a theme explored via a multimedia installation in the final gallery.
The Museum’s Costume Institute Gala Benefit serves as the main source of annual funding for exhibitions, operations, and capital improvements.
