Mets Star Johan Santana Was Accused of Rape

NEW YORK — New York Mets ace Johan Santana is speaking out after a report said he was accused of raping a woman last year in Florida.

The pitcher issued a statement Wednesday after TMZ posted the police report from the case, which was later dropped when prosecutors determined there was a lack of evidence against him.

"I will make a statement and hopefully, I will make myself clear," Santana told reporters before the Tigers-Mets game at Citi Field. "I’m aware of this situation. What I can tell you is that police had investigated these claims last year and I was never charged with anything and the case is closed. Unfortunately, at this time, that is all I can say. I have no further comments."

According to the police report, Santana and the woman were on a Fort Meyers golf course on Oct. 27 when he allegedly "began to kiss her and pull up her top, unclasping her bra." She claims Santana went on to sexually assault her, despite her multiple pleas for him to stop. Afterward, she said she watched him play tennis.

Officials told TMZ that DNA evidence collected proved there was intercourse.

"There was not enough evidence to prove lack of consent," the prosecutor concluded, according to the documents obtained by TMZ. "The alleged victim’s statement is not consistent with other witnesses."
