BALTIMORE — Michael Phelps escaped injury Thursday night when his Cadillac Escalade struck a car in a Baltimore intersection, however the driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital.
According to the Baltimore Sun, the Olympic swimming champ collided with a Honda Accord at a Mid-Town Belvedere intersection. The unidentified woman, who was described as “shaken up,” was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she was treated and released.
Phelps was driving with two passengers, a male and a female, who were both uninjured. The trio had been out on the town prior to the 9 p.m. crash, but police said they did not believe alcohol was involved in the accident. Phelps was not given a Breathalyzer test.
“There was no need,” a police spokesman told the paper. “He was completely coherent. He was cooperating with police. He gave a witness statement as to what occurred.”
Phelps has had his share of brushes with the law in recent time. In 2004, he pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and was sentenced to 18 months’ probation.
He was also suspended for three months by USA Swimming earlier this year after a British tabloid published a photo of him smoking a marijuana pipe.
Phelps holds the Olympic record with 14 gold medals for swimming.
