HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Neil Patrick Harris says he was surprised to learn Britney Spears would soon be guest-starring on his CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother."
"I was shocked that Madame Spears was willing to come and do some acting," the 34-year-old actor reveals to Entertainment Tonight. "She hasn't acted in a while."
Harris says the troubled 26-year-old pop star, who appeared on an episode of the NBC comedy "Will & Grace" in 2006, will have to dig deep for her guest appearance.
"This is a very interesting role," he says. "It is very not like her at all in real life in any of her previous chapters."
On the episode, set to air March 24, Harris says Spears will play "the secretary to another girl that Ted [Josh Radnor] is after. So, it will be very unlike any Britney we have seen before, and we have seen a lot of Britney recently."
The former "Doogie Howser" star says he is looking forward to finding out about the real Britney Spears.
"What if she shows up on set and she is absolutely, totally normal and that whole thing has been a big ruse?," he jokingly says.
