HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Finally an awards show that goes off without a hitch.
Last night's Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles gave "The Sopranos" one final curtain call, with stars James Gandolfini winning Best Actor in a Drama Series and co-star Edie Falco earning Best Actress honors.
"This was so not supposed to happen," quipped Falco.
The HBO series, which ended its run last June after six seasons, also captured best drama series cast honors.
"30 Rock" stars Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey won best actor and actress, respectively, in the TV comedy series category, while fellow NBC series "The Office" won best comedy series cast.
"I want to thank anyone in the Screen Actors Guild for considering me an actor at all," Fey joked during her acceptance speech.
In the movie categories, best cast honors went to the ensemble of "No Country For Old Men," with Javier Bardem also winning best supporting actor honors for his chilling performance as a killer in the Coen Brothers' film.
Best supporting actress honors went to Ruby Dee for her role in "American Gangster."
Meanwhile, Julie Christie won top actress for "Away From Her," while Daniel Day-Lewis won top actor for his performance in the historical Western, "There Will Be Blood," in which he plays a baron of California's oil boom in the early 20th century whose commercial interests put him at odds with a young preacher. The actor dedicated his award to Heath Ledger, who was discovered dead in New York last week at the age of 28.
Calling Ledger an inspiration, Day-Lewis said, "Of course, in Brokeback Mountain he was unique. He was perfect. And that scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever seen."
