HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Oprah Winfrey has some advice for Rihanna and Chris Brown — take your time before getting back together, if at all.
“Chris Brown and Rihanna, if I was your friend, I would call you up and I would say, ‘Give it some time, get yourself some counseling, take care of yourself. Heal yourself first,’ ” the media mogul advised Friday on her talk show.
Winfrey was speaking out after Brown was charged the day before with two felonies stemming from his alleged assault of Rihanna on Feb. 8. The couple reportedly got into a fight while driving after Rihanna found a text message from another woman on Brown’s cell phone.
Brown is currently free on $50,000 bail and is due back in court on April 6.
Two weekends ago, Brown and Rihanna reportedly reconciled, spending time together at the Star Island mansion of Sean “Diddy” Combs. However, Winfrey strongly urged Rihanna to think twice about a reunion, particularly one so soon after the alleged incident.
“I’ve been saying this to women for years: ‘If a man hits you once, he will hit you again,’ ” said Winfrey.
Winfrey’s friend and studio guest, Gayle King, also shared her opinion on the pair reportedly dating again.
“My thing about this is, if you guys want to get back together, I’m okay with that, but at least take some time,” she said. “I’m so worried that she’s sending the wrong message to the fans. And him, too.”
For her part, Winfrey is planning to devote an entire upcoming show to a discussion on domestic violence.
“It makes me so sad that I said to the producers, ‘I want to do a show about it this week dedicated to all the Rihanna’s of the world,’ ” she said.
