Country singer Merle Haggard, Broadway composer Jerry Herman and dancer Bill T. Jones were also honored at the 33rd annual national celebration of the arts, which will air on CBS on Dec. 28.

"The Kennedy Center celebrates five individuals who have spent their lives enriching, inspiring and elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world," Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein previously said.

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions were presented Saturday night at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Recipients are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts—whether in dance, music, theater, opera, motion pictures, or television.
