HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Pee-wee Herman is alive and well!
Paul Reubens, the creator of the lovable bow-tied star of “Pee-wee’s Funhouse,” appeared in character on Tuesday night’s “Jay Leno Show,” where he dropped a bombshell by showing off his new abstinence ring.
“I’m only two days into it,” said Reubens, whose career nosedived after being arrested for indecent exposure in 1991 at a movie theater. “Not easy!”
The late-night appearance follows Reubens’ August announcement that he would be playing Pee-wee in a new stage show at the Music Box in Hollywood. The production, titled “The Pee-wee Herman Show,” will offer a fresh take on the actor’s original theatrical show of the same name that began at the Groundlings Theatre in 1981.
“I’ve put part of him away for a long time, but part of him has always been here with me,” Reubens previously told the Los Angeles Times of his comeback. “I think it will be like riding a bike — which is not a bad analogy for Pee-wee, by the way.”
“I have some fear that he won’t be funny after all this time,” he added. “I don’t want to ruin it.”
