NEW YORK — Rap star Remy Ma was convicted Thursday for shooting a woman outside a Manhattan nightclub last summer.
The star’s defense team had conceded that the rapper had fired a shot, but said it was accident. The defense said the July 2007 gunshot was aimed at a friend who was suspected of stealing $3,000 from Remy Ma, whose real name is Remy Smith.
The rapper’s friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, was hit in the abdomen and required three surgical operations.
The 26-year-old faces up to 25 years in prison following her conviction for assault, weapon possession and attempted coercion. She left the court room in tears after hearing the result.
Justice Rena Uviller ordered the star to remain in jail without bail until she is sentenced on April 23.
Remy Ma is former member of Fat Joe’s rap crew, Terror Squad. She was featured on the group’s 2004 hit song “Lean Back,” which earned a Grammy nomination. Her debut solo album, “There’s Something about Remy: Based on a True Story,” was released in 2006.
