Rooney Mara Lands Lead in ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo‎’ Movie

Rooney Mara has landed the coveted role of a mysterious computer hacker in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Hollywood remake based on the first book in Stieg Larsson’s best-selling series, Sony Pictures announced Monday.

The 25-year-old Mara will star alongside Daniel Craig, who will portray discredited journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Together, the twosome team up to solve the mystery of a 40-year-old murder in the David Fincher-directed remake of the 2009 Swedish thriller of the same name.

Dragon Tattoo, which begins shooting next month in Sweden, is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2011. It is the first film in a three-part series that will also include The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

Others who were reportedly in the running for the Salander role were Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska.

Mara will next been seen in The Social Network with Justin Timberlake, a film also directed by Fincher.
