HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Sarah McLachlan and her husband Ashwin Sood are splitting up.
The 40-year-old singer made the revelation during an interview with Billboard magazine to promote her upcoming greatest hits album, which includes two new tracks that center around the pain of the split.

The 40-year-old singer made the revelation during an interview with Billboard magazine to promote her upcoming greatest hits album, which includes two new tracks that center around the pain of the split.
“I’m separating from my husband, so these are the songs about that,” McLachlan told the music mag about the new songs on her latest release titled, “Closer: The Best of Sarah McLachlan.”
McLachlan and Sood, who is a drummer in her band, have been married for 11 years. They have two young daughters, India Ann Sushil, 6, and Taja Summer, 14 months.
McLachlan described the breakup as “pretty gross,” but the Grammy winner did not elaborate any further.
“I wasn’t planning on saying anything,” she said, “but it’s gonna come out at some point. I haven’t said anything about it because I’ve been terrified to, but I figure … there’s no good time to say it, so I just said it.”
The Nova Scotia native described one of the new songs, “U Want Me 2,” as being “about that really uncertain, confusing place at the end of a relationship when there’s no communication or closure, everything’s still up in the air and there’s a lot of anger and sadness. It’s sort of that working through ‘How do we move forward … with some dignity and grace.’ “
McLachlan’s greatest hits album is set to be released Oct. 7.
