Senator Accused in Travolta Extortion Plot Resigns

NASSAU, Bahamas — Sen. Pleasant Bridgewater, the Bahama lawmaker at the center of an alleged scheme targeting John Travolta after the death of his son, has resigned, according to The Associated Press.

Bridgewater was arrested Thursday on charges of abetment to extort and conspiracy to extort. She was released a day later on a $40,000 bail, AP says.

In resigning, Bridgewater assured that she was innocent and pledged to fight “untrue and unfair charges.”

Ambulance driver Tarino Lightbourne and Obie Wilchcombe, the former Bahamian Minister of Tourism, have also been questioned by authorities in the alleged scheme.

Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of the “Grease” star and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, died at his family’s vacation home in the Bahamas on Jan. 2.

Police in the Bahamas have yet to disclose the exact nature of the alleged plot.
