HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Moviegoers were far more interested in an ogre than sex over the weekend.
Shrek Forever After won the box office for the second straight weekend with $55.7 million in sales over the Memorial Day holiday, according to studio estimates released Monday.
The fourth installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise easily outlasted a pair of debuts. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time at $37.8 million and Sex and the City 2 at $37.1 million opened in second and third place, respectively. The films could change places once final numbers are released Tuesday.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 2 finished fourth at $20.6 million. Following just behind was Russell Crowe’s Robin Hood ($13.6 million) in fifth place.
