‘Shutter Island’ Remains Top Box Office Destination

Shutter IslandHOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Shutter Island is still a big destination.

The creepy thriller set at a remote insane asylum remained the No. 1 movie for the second straight weekend, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The film, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, had ticket sales of $22.2 million. The total outdistanced Cop Out, the Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan police comedy that debuted with $18.6 million.

Opening in third place was the horror remake The Crazies with $16.5 million.

James Cameron’s sci-fi adventure Avatar ($14 million) and Fox’s Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief ($9.8 million) rounded out the weekend top five.
