HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Steve Harvey has fired back at his ex-wife after she posted a string of videos on YouTube last month, claiming he cheated, stole their son Wynton, and left her homeless.
In an unusual move, the comedian and self-help author asked a judge to temporarily lift a gag order on the former couple’s 2005 divorce proceedings to clear his name and "report the truth," he revealed in a statement.
With regards to Mary Harvey’s cheating claims, the court documents state the divorce was granted due to "irreconcilable differences." It also reveals that Steve Harvey’s current wife, Marjorie Bridges, "was not named in the original divorce proceeding nor was she the cause of the marital break-up."
Regarding their son, Steve Harvey was awarded primary custody and the 13-year-old was willingly sent to his father, according to the statement.
As for Mary Harvey’s homeless claims, she was paid $40,000 a month until March 2009 and then given a lump sum of $1.5 million as part of the couple’s divorce settlement. She was also awarded three houses.
Steve Harvey’s attorney slammed the accusations made in the videos soon after they were posted.
"We are appalled and aware of the videos and other fabricated documents … which contained false, misleading, derogatory, disparaging, malicious, explicit and slanderous information about Mr. Harvey, his current wife and others," lawyer Bobbie Edmonds said at the time. "The ex-wife is fully aware of the court’s current orders and permanent injunctions which prohibit either party, their lawyers or representatives from discussing and releasing information on the Internet and to the media. We are taking the necessary legal steps to rectify this matter to the full extent of the law and we will be seeking contempt and sanctions against her for such reprehensible and callous disregard for the court orders."
