HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Shrek just took one heck of a karate chop.
The Karate Kid, a Sony remake of the classic 1984 film by the same name, debuted with a whopping $56 million in ticket sales to claim the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office, according to studio estimates released Sunday.
The total easily outdistanced a big-screen adaption of the hit ’80s television series The A-Team, which opened in second place at $26 million.
After three straight weekends at No. 1, Shrek Forever After slipped to third place at $15.8 million.
Rounding out the top five were Get Him to the Greek ($10.1 million) and Killers ($8.2 million), which finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
