NEW YORK — Type O Negative singer Peter Steele was pronounced dead Wednesday night from an apparent heart failure. He was 48.
"Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now," the band’s manager, Mike Renault, wrote in an email to CBS News.
The 6-foot-7 Steele, who was born Petrus T. Ratajczyk, was the lead singer, bassist, and composer for the Gothic metal band.
Prior to joining Type O Negative, the Brooklyn, N.Y. native was in the metal group Fallout and the thrash band Carnivore.
Type O Negative is expected to release a statement about Steele’s death later today.
