HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — “Friday the 13th” managed to scared away the competition at the weekend box office as the 1980 slasher remake was the No. 1 movie with sales topping $42 million.
The weekend total set a new record for the horror genre, surpassing the $39.1 millon debut by “The Grudge” in 2004.
The newest installment of the franchise revolving around killer Jason Voorhees features a young cast that includes Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker, Aaron Yoo and Amanda Righetti.
