The 38-year-old actress is engaged to marry musician Martyn Lenoble, her publicist confirmed Friday to the Associated Press.
The couple, who have been dating for two years, got engaged on Valentine's Day. They have yet to set a wedding date.
This will be the second marriage for both Applegate and the 41-year-old Lenoble, who is a founding member of the rock group Porno for Pyros.
Applegate, who rose to fame as Kelly Bundy on Fox's Married ... With Children, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2008. She is now free of cancer after undergoing a double mastectomy.
"It wasn't until this happened that I found what my purpose was," she previously told Ellen DeGeneres about her cancer scare. "My purpose was to have been an actor, to have a voice, and then to be this person with breast cancer ... to come out and educate people and show you that it's not an old ladies disease and to tell you that if you're high risk, you don't wait until you're 40 to get a mammogram.
"That became my purpose. It energized me and revitalized me."
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Christina Applegate says she's feel much better after being diagnosed with breast cancer in March and enduring what she now refers to as the "dark days of summer."
Appearing on Friday's Ellen DeGeneres Show, the longtime actress said she kept her illness a secret for some time on the set of her ABC sitcom "Samantha Who?"
"I went back to work for about five weeks right after the second surgery," explained Applegate, who is now free of cancer after undergoing a double mastectomy. "I didn't tell anyone."
The former "Married With Children" star then corrected herself, admitting she did let a few people know about her diagnosis.
"I told my make-up and hair people, and the people that are really close to me, just so I had a protection wall so that no one was pushing me," said Applegate, who then joked, "they do that a lot on my set ... just shove me randomly for no reason."
Applegate told the talk-show host that she's come a long way since they last saw each other at September's Stand Up to Cancer fundraiser.
"I was afraid of people hugging me," Applegate recalled of the charity event. "People are really huggy at those things."
"I apologize, I hugged you," replied DeGeneres.
"Really hard too!" joked Applegate. "But know, I’m good. I’ll grab ya."
"I'm going to hug you a bunch during this commercial break," responded DeGeneres.
Applegate admitted it was "kind of a tough summer on a lot of fronts," without going into any detail on the death of her ex-boyfriend, Lee Grivas, in July. On the positive side, the Hollywood native said she discovered her true purpose in life.
"It was until this happened that I found what my purpose was," confessed Applegate. "My purpose was to have been an actor, to have a voice, and then to be this 36-year-old person with breast cancer ... to come out and educate people and show you that it's not an old ladies disease and to tell you that if you're high risk, you don't wait until you're 40 to get a mammogram.
"That became my purpose. It energized me and revitalized me."
