HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Wyclef Jean is pleading for help in the wake of Tuesday's devastating earthquake in his native Haiti.
"I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse," the 37-year-old recording artist wrote on his blog. "The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.
"President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands 'ready to assist' the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible."
An estimated 3 million people may be in need of help after the 7.0 earthquake, in which thousands were likely killed across the impoverished capital. Jean has since traveled back home to help his family and country. He urged others to assist in one of two ways: donate $5 to his Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund by texting "Yele" to 501501 (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or visit www.yele.org and click on donate.
