HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Michelle Williams has spoken out for the first time since the death of her former fiancé Heath Ledger.
"Please respect our need to grieve privately. My heart is broken," the 27-year-old actress said Friday in a statement released by Ledger's rep, Reuters reports.
"I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father," continued Williams in her statement.
"All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day.
"His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still.
"She will be brought up with the best memories of him," ended Williams' statement.
The 28-year-old Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Jan. 22. A day after his death, a New York City medical examiner ruled Ledger's initial autopsy was inconclusive. Results from additional tests to determine the cause of death are expected within the next two weeks.
Williams and Ledger met on the set of "Brokeback Mountain," in which the late actor was nominated for an Oscar. They later became engaged, but broke off their relationship in 2007. Their daughter, Matilda, was born Oct. 28, 2005 in New York City.
