Heath Ledger's Family 'Excited' About His Oscar Nomination

By Alexis Sezar on January 23, 2009

PERTH, Australia — Heath Ledger's family came together on Friday, exactly one year after the actor died from an accidental prescription drug overdose.

The actor's older sister, Kate, along with his two half-sisters, Ashleigh and Olivia, spoke to the media while standing at Cottesloe Beach, one of Ledger's favorite hangouts and the site of his wake in his native Australia. They admitted that they are still in the midst of grieving.

"To us [his family] it seems like nearly yesterday, and we are all still nursing broken hearts," said Kate. "Like anyone who loses a family member, it has opened our eyes to the intense suffering and painful journey that is death."

Ledger left behind a 3-year-old daughter, Matilda, with his former girlfriend, actress Michelle Williams. His family admitted they were thankful to still have each in their lives.

"We fell truly blessed to have Heath's beautiful daughter, Matilda and her lovely Mom, Michelle in our lives," said Kate. "And although we are physically challenged at times by the tyranny of distance, we are always in constant contact and take every opportunity possible to catch up."

"Michelle is doing an amazing job with 'our girl' and together we will cherish every moment of her steps through life," added Kate.

As many expected, Thursday's Academy Award nominations included a best supporting actor nod for Ledger's portrayal of the Joker in the Batman movie "The Dark Knight." With the honor, Ledger became only the sixth actor to get a posthumous Oscar nomination.

"Although we would love to have him here with us, we are so proud and so excited on his behalf," expressed Ashleigh. "In Heath's words, he had the time of his life portraying the Joker and said that it was the most fun he'd ever had working on a film. On Heath's behalf we thank the Motion Picture Academy for recognizing his work."

"What an unbelievable legacy he has left for Matilda and our family," added Ashleigh. "We will take this opportunity to honor his wonderful life and take comfort in knowing Heath will continue to touch future generations through this amazing art form."

Heath Ledger's Golden Globe Headed for Daughter Matilda

By Chloe Bunker on January 13, 2009

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — The Golden Globe award won by the late Heath Ledger Sunday night is headed for his 3-year-old daughter, Matilda.

"I should imagine that eventually it will be going to Matilda," the actor's mother, Sally Bell, told People magazine on Monday. "At this stage she is only so young, but down the track she will have all these things. It will belong to her because she is part of him."

Ledger, who died from an accidental prescription drug overdose last January, won best supporting actor for his turn as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."

Bell said she was boarding a flight when learned that her son had won his first Golden Globe. She said the moment led to a "a few tears."

"There is a lot of emotion tied up in this and we have to deal with that emotion first before we can relax and enjoy the moment, if you know what I mean," said Bell, who lives in the actor's native Australia.

Bell said Matilda, who is the only child of Ledger and actress Michelle Williams, will have plenty of opportunities to keep her father's memory alive in the future, thanks to his many critically-acclaimed performances.

"It is such a fantastic and wonderful legacy for his daughter," she told the mag. "Matilda will have so many people who will be able to speak to her about her father's abilities and [the] respect he had in the industry.

"That is such a wonderful legacy to leave."
