HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Mary-Kate Olsen has spoken out for the first time since Tuesday's tragic death of Heath Ledger.
The 21-year-old actress has been in the news following the actor's death because authorities revealed on Wednesday that the masseuse who discovered Ledger's body called Olsen first before dialing 911.
"Heath was a friend," Olsen says exclusively to Entertainment Tonight. "His death is a tragic loss. My thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time."
There have been several media reports that the New York Police Department is interested in questioning Olsen regarding the phone calls made by the masseuse, but the NYPD tells ET that those stories are inaccurate and they do not intend to question her.
Ledger's masseuse, Diana Wolozin, arrived at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday for her scheduled appointment with the actor and was let in by housekeeper Teresa Solomon. When Ledger failed to come out of his bedroom by 3 p.m., Wolozin called him on her cell phone. After no one picked up, she entered the room, set up the massage table near his bed, and shook him while he was lying in bed.
When the 28-year-old star failed to respond, Wolozin used the speed dial on Ledger's cell phone to call Olsen, knowing she was a friend of the actor.
When reached in California, Olsen initially told Wolozin she would call security people she knew in New York for help. With the "Brokeback Mountain" star still unconscious, Wolozin decided to dial 911 herself at 3:26 p.m.
Paramedics arrived at the apartment at almost the exact same time as Olsen's security people, at 3:33 p.m.
Attempts to revive Ledger using defibrillators and CPR failed, and he was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. By then, more security personnel summoned by Olsen had arrived, in addition to the NYPD.
