'Desperate Housewives' Stars Pledge Support for Marc Cherry in Nicollette Sheridan Lawsuit

By Alexis Sezar on April 13, 2010

LOS ANGELES — The residents of Wisteria Lane are standing behind their main man.

Desperate Housewives stars Eva Longoria Parker, Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman issued a joint statement Tuesday pledging their support for show creator Marc Cherry, who is being sued by former cast member Nicollette Sheridan.

"It would be irresponsible of us to let the public believe that being a part of this show from its inception has been anything but a blessing," the show's stars said in a statement to People. "We have no first-hand knowledge of what Nicollette may or may not have experienced, but we would never characterize our set as a hostile environment."

"It is, in fact, the opposite," the statement continued. "The friendships and support that Marc Cherry, the cast, the crew and the producers have shared for the past six years have made this a wonderful job that we are grateful for every day."

In her lawsuit, Sheridan claims Cherry "forcefully hit her with his hand across her face and head" on the ABC show's set in September 2008. The Golden Globe nominee contends she was later fired after reporting the incident to the network.

The suit, which also names ABC, accuses the producer of creating a hostile work environment. It also mentions Hatcher, claiming Cherry once told Sheridan, "I hope Teri Hatcher gets hit by a car and dies."

The statement added it was "unfortunate and inappropriate" for Sheridan's legal team to have mentioned Hatcher without her authorization.

Hatcher said: "While my adoration and respect for the classic and dynamic chemistry of the characters of Susan and Edie is indelible, I'm honored to stand with Eva, Felicity and Marcia, as a group and clarify that our set environment is nothing less than an amazingly positive experience. I have never felt discriminated against. In fact, I have felt heard and respected by Marc and other executives in regards to both my professional and personal needs."

Nicollette Sheridan Sheds Light on 'Desperate Housewives' Exit

By Chloe Bunker on April 14, 2009

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Nicollette Sheridan is opening up about her exit from "Desperate Housewives," a move the actress considers a "risky decision."

In the latest issue of TV Guide, the 45-year-old star talks about her reaction when she first heard the news that her character Edie Britt was finished on the show.

"I said, 'OK, sayonara. It's been a great ride. Thank you,' " she recalls, then warning, "[killing off Edie] was a risky decision that could have devastating ramifications."

That warning was directed at the show's creator, Marc Cherry, whom Sheridan believes has had it in for her from the beginning.

"Somebody up there really wanted her dead," Sheridan tells the magazine in reference to Cherry.

"I think that whoever Edie represented in Marc's life was somebody he didn't like," she adds. "And he had a very difficult time distinguishing between fact and fiction."

Cherry was quick to defend himself, saying Sheridan's exit wasn't personal.

"Edie's already slept with most of the guys on the street and has caused about as many problems as she could," he explains to the mag.

"There has been tremendous pressure put on me to find ways to cut costs," he continues. "The network is saying to all the shows: 'The company is really hurting financially. You must find a way to produce these shows more cheaply.' "

Sheridan wasn't about to buy Cherry's explanation after feeling from the beginning that she wasn't part of his big four — Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman and Eva Longoria Parker.

"When you have a jewel," she asks of Cherry, "why not polish it and put it out there for all to see?"

While part of her perhaps wishes things would have been different all along on Wisteria Lane, Sheridan says she's looking forward to the next chapter in her life.

"When the show started it was such a different beast. It was exciting and dangerous and funny and edgy and bizarre," says Sheridan. "It started feeling a little complacent, and that was very frustrating."
