HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Adam Lambert's risqué performance at Sunday night's American Music Awards seems to have everyone up in arms. Well, everyone but the former American Idol star that is.
"I'm not a babysitter, I'm a performer," the 27-year-old glam rocker told Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday, adding, "The spirit of rock and roll is alive and well."
Lambert spoke with Seacrest hours after ABC cancelled his scheduled appearance on Wednesday's Good Morning America. The network has been fielding complaints from callers ever since airing Lambert's sex charged performance of "For Your Entertainment" at the AMAs. The singer closed the show by simulating oral sex from a male backup dancer to go along with a make-out session with his male keyboardist.
"It's choreography, we were dancing," Lambert said of his controversial AMA performance. "The sexuality of it kind of got a little more extreme when I got up on stage. I think the adrenaline kind of took me over, and I admit it. I'm proud of the fact that I did get a little carried away."
The openly gay Lambert also told Seacrest that he was the victim of a double standard.
"I don't feel I owe anyone an apology for anything," he said. "I performed, it was late night TV, I did something that female performers have been doing for years, no different. It's just the fact that I'm me and it's a little different for people. It's really not that big of a deal."
When asked about GMA cancelling his appearance, Lambert said, "they gotta do what they gotta do."
"It's too bad, I think there were a lot of fans who were excited to come see me," said Lambert, who will now appear on CBS' The Early Show on Wednesday. "They probably had a lot of pressure coming at them from certain people who weren't happy about it. I respect their decision — I don't necessarily agree with it, but they need to do what they need to do."
