LOS ANGELES — Adam Lambert has never shied from being open about his sexuality, which makes his declaration in the latest issue of Rolling Stone far from shocking.
"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," the "American Idol" rocker tells the mag. "I'm proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It's just another part of me."
Lambert admits that he realized very early in his childhood that his sexual feelings were different than the others.
"I was so scared of my sexuality," Lambert confessed. "I started to realize I wasn't like every other boy, and I was just in my own head about it, tripping myself out."
During his "Idol" run, photos of Lambert kissing another man at the Burning Man Festival made their rounds on the Web. All along, the 27-year-old singer said he had the full support of everyone at Fox.
"They were completely supportive of any decision I made," said Lambert, who has since been photographed with boyfriend Drake LaBry, an interior designer. "I was worried that [coming out] would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing. I'm an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing – it shouldn't matter."
"Except it does," he added with a sigh. "It's really confusing."
While he's never hid from his sexuality, moving forward Lambert wants the focus to be on his music and his blossoming career.
"I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader," he said.
