O.J. Simpson Sentenced to At Least Nine Years In Prison

By Rich King on December 5, 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — A Las Vegas judge lowered the boom on O.J. Simpson Friday, sentencing the former football great to at least nine years in prison for armed robbery, The Associated Press reports.

Judge Jackie Glass, known for her stiff penalties, issued the punishment after Simpson made a final plea for leniency.

"I didn't want to steal anything from anyone. ... I'm sorry, sorry," Simpson pleaded, according to AP.

"It was much more than stupidity," responded Glass.

Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole after just less than a third of his sentence.

Friday's sentencing stemmed from a 2007 incident inside a Las Vegas hotel room, in which Simpson argued with two sports memorabilia dealers over items that he claimed to be his own.

Simpson's co-defendant, Clarence "C.J. Stewart, was sentenced to up to 27 years behind bars.

While many are sure to argue that Friday's sentencing was payback for Simpson's 1994 aquittal in the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, Glass has let it be known that the Hall of Famer's past was never a factor.

"I'm not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else," said Glass, according to AP.

Still, Simpson's case was closely watched by many, including the Goldman family.

"There's never closure. Ron is always gone," Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, told AP outside the court on Friday. "What we have is satisfaction that this monster is where he belongs behind bars."

O.J. Simpson Found Guilty in Las Vegas Robbery Trial

By Rich King on October 4, 2008

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — O.J. Simpson was found guilty late Friday night on all 12 counts stemming from his memorabilia showdown in a Las Vegas hotel room last year, The Associated Press reports.

After deliberating for more than 13 hours, jurors found the NFL Hall of Fame football star guilty of armed robbery, kidnapping and 10 other charges. In the Sept. 13, 2007 incident, Simpson rounded up five men to storm into a hotel room, where they seized several items from two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint.

The verdict was handed down exactly 13 years to the day after Simpson was acquitted in the highly-publicized murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Many have viewed Simpson's latest trial as potential justice.

"I don't like to use the word payback," defense attorney Yale Galanter told AP. "I can tell you from the beginning my biggest concern ... was whether or not the jury would be able to separate their very strong feelings about Mr. Simpson and judge him fairly and honestly."

Simpson could spend the remainder of his life in jail.

His attorney has already announced plans to appeal.

Simpson's co-defendant, Clarence "C.J." Stewart, 54, also was found guilty on all charges.

After the verdicts were read, Simpson was led away in handcuffs as his sister, Carmelita Durio, sobbed and eventually fainted.

In an interview with an AP reporter on Thursday, Simpson appeared to be expecting the worst, saying he was "afraid that I won't get to go to my kids' college graduations after I managed to get them through college."

He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 5
