HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy have decided to break up after five years of dating, the Hollywood stars revealed Tuesday.
"Jenny and I have just ended our 5yr relationship," wrote Carrey on Twitter. "I'm grateful 4 the many blessings we've shared and I wish her the very best! S'okay! ?;^>"
McCarthy followed with her own tweet a short while later in which she promised to remain close to the actor and his daughter, musician Jane Carrey.
"Im so grateful for the years Jim and I had together," said the former Playboy Playmate. "I will stay committed to Jane and will always keep Jim as a leading man in my heart."
Carrey enjoyed his own close relationship with McCarthy's 7-year-old son, Evan, who has autism.
The couple's breakup comes as a surprise after years of being one of Hollywood's strongest relationships. They first began dating over the holidays in 2005 but did not make their relationship public until the following summer.
McCarthy, 37, was previously married to actor-director John Asher, who is Evan's father. She filed for divorce from Asher in August 2005.
Carrey, 48, has been married twice before, first to Melissa Women, with whom he welcomed his only daughter. He was also briefly married to actress Lauren Holly.
Throughout the course of their relationship, the pair maintained they had no desire to ever get married.
"There will be no wedding," McCarthy once told People. "Goldie [Hawn] and Kurt [Russell] have it made, and that's what we can strive for."
